Our Story
Our Humble Beginnings
Nurse2Nurse is a nonprofit organization founded approximately six years ago by Kolu Mator, inspired by a simple act of compassion that grew into a global mission.
The organization’s roots trace back to a change in uniform policy at York Hospital. When the hospital transitioned to new scrubs, Kolu asked whether the gently used uniforms could be donated rather than discarded. Her vision was to send these scrubs to healthcare workers in her native country of Liberia—nurses and medical staff who lacked even basic resources. Liberia, a West African nation, had endured three civil wars over a 16-year period, leaving its healthcare system severely weakened.
The Scrub Drive
The scrub drive exceeded all expectations. With the support of her family and transportation assistance from Samaritan’s Purse, Kolu successfully donated more than 7,000 sets of scrubs to 14 healthcare facilities across Liberia. While distributing the supplies, she witnessed firsthand the devastating impact years of conflict had left on the healthcare system—particularly on nurses struggling to serve patients with minimal tools and support. This experience became the catalyst for creating a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting healthcare workers worldwide, beginning with Liberia.
Nurse2Nurse Is Born
In March 2020, a five-member Nurse2Nurse volunteer assessment team traveled to Liberia and met with leadership from the Ministry of Health. During these discussions, the organization’s mission and priorities were defined. Nurse2Nurse committed to focusing on providing essential resources for nurses while enhancing clinical training and education.
Fundraising & Impact
Nurse2Nurse has been primarily funded through generous donations and its annual fundraising galas. After hosting six highly successful galas, the organization is currently preparing for its 7th Annual Gala. In March 2025, Nurse2Nurse achieved a major milestone: training and equipping 1,000 Liberian nurses and midwives with nursing assessment kits. Each kit—costing approximately $80—includes a blood pressure cuff, thermometer, oxygen saturation probe, CPR mask, and AAA batteries.
Training Outcomes
To measure the effectiveness of its training programs, Nurse2Nurse administers pre- and post-training assessments. On average, pre-test scores begin around 20%, while post-test scores rise to an impressive 89%, demonstrating the powerful impact of education paired with proper tools.
